Although this girl lives with her mother, they are too poor to buy food. Children in severe poverty are often forced to find their meals on the streets.
According to UNICEF, approximately 1 million orphans and vulnerable children currently live in Rwanda. Vulnerable children may include those who live with a guardian, but severe poverty, conflict or other factors cause them to work on the streets.

The streets can be like a lonely prison.
