NEED staff member Katy Petershack heard about a great way to celebrate Valentine’s Day by making a gift that can benefit many. We thought we would share this with you! “Feed a child in honor of someone you love” is the slogan that the World Food Programme (WFP) is using this Valentine’s season. WFP created “The Wall Against Hunger, Valentine Edition” to combat world hunger by connecting individuals with the great cause of feeding a child. Whether you send an electronic valentine to someone you love or make a donation in their name and upload a photo on to the “Wall,” you are helping to provide meals to school children around the world.

In Stara School, located in the Kibera slum (the largest slum in Kenya), students eat free lunch from the WFP. The school’s enrollment has increased over 150% as a result. In Nepal, the WFP confronts a similar situation as it insures that children in 2,200 schools get meals.

The number of malnourished individuals is on the rise, and women, children, and rural communities often bear the brunt of underfeeding. Helping tackle this growing problem on Valentine’s Day means that 59 million primary school kids will not continue to go without proper food and nutrition this year.
