We are not out to
save the world, but
to tell the stories
of those who are

Taking that first step

I arrived in Dhaka, Bangladesh in the fall of 2008 to work¬ as a volunteer with Volunteer Services Overseas, an international development agency. My assignment was to act as an advocacy and networking advisor for the Bangladeshi NGO Uttaran.

With Uttaran, I traveled to the southern district of Tala, where I met hundreds of villagers whose homes are underwater seven months out of the year. Generations of river mismanagement have caused the flooding and destruction of thousands of villages and the displacement of some 400,000 people.

It was because of this experience that I chose to dedicate myself to photography. The power of images is limitless, and I feel it is my best chance for bringing out the positive change in the world. After spending time with the people of Tala, it is the least I can do.
